One account suggests B+ was developed by a Florida-based cultivator known as Mr. G,  a respected figure in the psychedelic space, who allegedly combined two distinct mushroom species, Psilocybe azurescens and P. cubensis, to create B+ mushrooms over 30+ years ago.

Others contend that the strain wasn’t invented. They believe B Plus cubensis was growing wild in subtropical regions, like Florida or Southeast Asia, where it was harvested by a mycologist who stumbled upon it.

The origin of the name B+ is also a mystery. Many mycologists and cultivators say it reflects the “above-average cultivation” performance of B Plus mushrooms. It is known for fast colonization, high resistance to contamination, and a unique ability to thrive in hot and cold conditions where other magic mushroom strains may struggle.

Another theory is that after inventing the magic mushroom, Mr. G distributed its spore prints underground to early collectors using the name B+, and it simply stuck.

How to Identify B+

Key physical features of B Plus cubensis mushrooms include:

• Cap

In early development, B+ mushrooms have convex, rounded caps that can reach up to 4 inches (approx. 10 cm) in diameter, flattening slightly at the center as they mature. 

The final cap size is heavily dictated by its environment, specifically nutrient availability, temperature, and humidity.

In terms of appearance, B Plus cubensis caps appear golden-brown to caramel as they develop, fading to a lighter tan or yellowish-brown in the later stages. The interior flesh is crisp white, and when fresh, the exterior may look glossy and smooth.

Underneath the caps are closely spaced, purplish-brown gills. This is where the B+ spores are produced and eventually released when the mushroom reaches full maturity.

• Stem

The stem (stipe) of B+ mushrooms is notably tall, growing to heights of 5+ inches (12.7 cm), slim, smooth, and hollow, with a pale cream to off-white exterior. 

While the upper portion remains slender, the stem thickens toward the base to form a small, bulbous structure. 

You’ll also notice a distinct ring — a remnant of the partial veil. In younger B Plus magic mushrooms, this veil protects the developing gills and connects the stem to the cap before breaking away as the fungus matures. 

If handled or damaged, the stem will bruise blue. This reaction is caused by oxidation and serves as a visual indicator of psilocybin, the hallucinogenic compound found within B+ magic mushrooms.
