Psilocybe cubensis Blue Meanie prints are often mistaken for the Panaeolus cyanescens variety that shares the same name, which has been around much longer than this Cube.

There’s a stark difference in physical attributes between the Pan Cyan and Cubensis Blue Meanie. Unlike the thin stems and off-white to gray caps of the Pan Cyan, the P. cubensis has thicker stems with lighter cream to tan caps. They are both known for their brilliant blue bruising, both in the stem and cap, when they are handled or damaged.

Spore Strain Origin

There is little information on the P. Cubensis strain of the Blue Meanies mushroom, other than its speculated origin in Australia, and a bit of fame. The name “Blue Meanie” was popularized by the 1970s Beatles movie Yellow Submarine.

Blue Meanies in the Wild

Psilocybe cubensis var. Blue Meanie can share many physical attributes of other “cubes,” as well as being a more prolific fruiter than Pan Cyans. When found growing in the wild, the smallish bell-shaped caps will pin in a light-brown or tan color and become lighter as they mature. The stipe, or the stem, will be much thicker than its panaeolus counterpart, much like what is present in other strains of Cubensis mushrooms.

Mushroom Spore Features

Blue Meanie spores are quite a dark purple in color, and can leave a dense spore print. They also are characterized by a deep blue stain that appears when the fruit of the mushroom itself is handled or damaged.
