Psilocybe var. Burmese Penis Envy is a relatively new and unstable hybrid of the Psilocybe var. Burma mushroom strain and Original Penis Envy. The instability refers to the varying genetics between the two mushrooms and the physical characteristics it produces. In the wild, the parent mushroom (Burma), is observed to be a vigorous colonizer that can produce fruit 6 inches or taller with 2 inch wide caps at maturity. Burma drops dense dark spore prints, while Penis Envy rarely drops spores. Original Penis Envy is an extremely well known strain and was created through rigorous isolation. PE is known for its thick white stems, bulbous caps, with notoriously stingy veils that restrict the production of spores. The combination of the “standard” cubensis spore phenotype with Burma, and the thicker outer cell wall of Penis Envy, create a fascinating and fresh opportunity for your microscopy!

Spore Strain Origin

Burma was first collected in Myanmar, a country between Thailand and India, by a Thai student and later passed on to mycologist John W. Allen. Penis Envy is believed to trace back to a wild specimen collected in the Colombian Amazon in the early 1970’s and linked to Terrence McKenna. It was later isolated by Steven Pollock into the phallic shaped mushroom.

Mushrooms in the Wild

Burma has been observed to colonize quickly and form 6 inch tall stems and 2 inch wide caps on buffalo dung and enriched soil in grazing fields and rice paddies in the warm humid environment of Myanmar. Penis Envy is not found in the wild and has been stabilized through repeated selective cloning.

Mushroom Spore Features

Burma spores exhibit the standard sub-ellipsoid shape and are dark brownish in color. Due to there cap size, Burma produce large and dense spore prints. Penis Envy is well known for its lack of spore print production due to the veil remaining attached into maturity. These dark brown to purple spores have thicker cell walls than other cubensis strains and are noticeably irregular in shape.
