Getting Started
What are mushroom spores?
Think of mushroom spores as nature’s seeds – but for mushrooms! Just like a plant produces seeds to reproduce, mushrooms release spores to create new mushrooms. These microscopic reproductive units are fascinating to study under a microscope and are found on the underside of a mushroom’s cap.
Here’s what makes spores amazing: a single mushroom can produce billions of spores per day. We collect these spores in sterile water to create our spore syringes, giving you millions of specimens for your microscopic research.
Unlike plant seeds, spores are incredibly tiny – so small you often can’t see them with the naked eye. But when you place a drop from our spore syringe under a microscope, you’ll discover a whole world of unique shapes, sizes, and characteristics that vary between different mushroom strains.
At PNW Spore, we specialize in Psilocybe Cubensis spores, which are completely legal to own and study for research purposes. Each strain has its own distinct spore characteristics, making microscopy an exciting way to explore the diversity of the mushroom kingdom.

Product Information
What's the difference between spore syringes and spore prints?
Great question! Both contain the same spores, but they’re prepared differently for your research needs.
Spore Syringes are our specialty here at PNW Spore Co. We collect spores and suspend them in sterile water, creating a liquid solution that’s ready to use for microscopic study. Simply place a drop on a slide, and you’re ready to explore! Our premium spore syringes stay viable for 18-24 months when refrigerated and contain millions of spores per syringe.
Spore Prints are created by placing a fresh mushroom cap on paper or glass, allowing the spores to naturally fall and create a “print” pattern. These dried spore deposits can be stored longer term, but require rehydration before microscopic research.
For beginners, we recommend starting with spore syringes – they’re more convenient, contamination-free, and ready for immediate microscopic research. Plus, you can see exactly what you’re getting with our lab-quality preparation process.
Want to learn more about what your spore syringe should look like? Check out our Spore Syringe Appearance guide.
Why do some syringes look different from others?
Each mushroom strain creates its own unique spore characteristics – and that’s exactly what makes mycology research so fascinating! Just like different plants produce different seeds, each P. Cubensis variety has distinct spore traits that affect how your syringe looks.
Here’s what you might see:
Clear liquid with no visible spores – Strains like Rusty Whyte create fine, powdery spores that mix completely with the sterile water. Don’t worry – they’re definitely there! Under a microscope, you’ll find a multitude of spores for your research.
Visible spores “peppered” throughout – Varieties like B+, Tidal Wave, and Jedi Mind F*ck often show physical specks floating in the solution.
Dark clumps or opaque clusters – Some strains naturally clump together, creating dense areas of spores that are clearly visible.
All of these appearances are completely normal! The specific variety and its natural spore print characteristics determine how your syringe will look. What matters most is that every syringe contains millions of viable spores for your microscopic research – our Quality Guarantee ensures it.
Curious about what to expect from your specific strain? Each product page includes details about that variety’s typical appearance.
How can I tell if my spores are viable?
Excellent question! Viable spores are essential for successful microscopic research, and there are several ways to assess your spore syringe quality.
Visual Inspection:
- Fresh appearance – Your syringe should contain clear sterile water with spores (visible or invisible, depending on the strain)
- No contamination signs – Look for any unusual colors, cloudiness, or strange odors that weren’t there originally
- Proper storage – Spores stored in the refrigerator maintain viability for 18-24 months
Microscopic Analysis: The most reliable way to confirm viability is under the microscope! Viable spores will appear:
- Well-formed and intact – Not broken or damaged
- Consistent in size and shape – Each strain has characteristic spore dimensions
- Free from contamination – No bacteria, mold, or other unwanted microorganisms
Trust Our Quality Guarantee: At PNW Spore Co., every syringe is produced in our actual lab using sterile techniques. Our Quality Guarantee ensures your spores are contamination-free and contain millions of viable specimens for research.
Having concerns? Email us at [email protected] – we’re here to help ensure your microscopic research is successful!
What should I do if I can't see any spores in my syringe?
Don’t panic – this is completely normal! Many of our premium strains create spores that are invisible to the naked eye, and that doesn’t mean they’re not there.
Why you might not see spores: Some varieties like Rusty Whyte produce incredibly fine spores that homogenize (mix thoroughly) with the sterile water, creating a crystal-clear appearance. Other strains may have spores that are simply too small to see without magnification.
What to do next:
- Check under the microscope – Place a drop on a slide and you’ll likely find a multitude of spores for your research
- Shake gently – Sometimes spores settle; a gentle shake can redistribute them
- Don’t worry about appearance – Clear doesn’t mean empty!
Remember: Every syringe from PNW Spore Co. is produced in our actual lab and guaranteed to contain millions of viable spores. Our Quality Guarantee covers exactly this situation – we stand behind every product we ship.

Legal & Research
Are mushroom spores legal?
Yes! Mushroom spores are federally legal in the United States for microscopic research and educational purposes.
The Legal Facts:
- The DEA has confirmed that Psilocybe Cubensis spores are federally legal prior to germination
- Spores contain no psilocybin – the psychoactive compound only develops during mushroom growth
- Research and microscopy are legal – studying spore characteristics is completely permitted
Important State Restrictions: While federally legal, we cannot ship Cubensis spores to:
- California (CA)
- Georgia (GA)
- Idaho (ID)
- Florida (FL)
These states have specific laws prohibiting the purchase and shipment of “magic mushroom spores.”
Our Commitment to Compliance: As a Washington State-based company, we operate in full compliance with all applicable U.S. laws. We sell spores strictly for research purposes only and do not provide cultivation guidance.
100% Legal Alternatives: Our Gourmet & Medicinal liquid cultures (shiitake, oyster, lion’s mane) are completely legal to purchase and cultivate in all 50 states!
Always Check Local Laws: Laws can vary by locality, so we encourage you to verify your local regulations before ordering.
Ready to explore legal mycological research? Your microscopic journey awaits!
Do you sell Cubensis liquid culture?
No. Our Washington State–based small business does not sell any products that are illegal in the United States.
The mycelium in Cubensis liquid culture has been shown to contain psilocybin, the psychoactive substance that gives magic mushrooms their psychedelic effects, which is still federally illegal.
California, Georgia, Idaho, Florida: While the DEA has confirmed that Cubensis spores themselves are not illegal, it’s still illegal to purchase and ship spores that are categorized as “magic mushroom spores” to GA, ID, and CA.
Always check local and state laws before making your purchase.
What's the difference between spore syringes & liquid culture?
These are two distinct products with different compositions and shelf lives:
Spore syringes contain a sterile liquid solution with mushroom spores (reproductive units similar to plant seeds). Our premium spore syringes offer excellent longevity, remaining viable for 18-24 months when properly refrigerated.
Liquid cultures are sterilized solutions containing water, nutrients, and living mushroom mycelium. Due to their active biological content, liquid cultures have a shorter lifespan of 2-3 months and must be refrigerated to maintain viability.
Can you answer questions regarding the use of spores for anything other than microscopy?
PNW Spore syringes are intended exclusively for microscopy and research purposes. We only provide support and guidance for microscopy-related questions.
Important: As a research-focused company, we do not discuss cultivation methods or provide cultivation advice. Any orders placed with implied intent to cultivate or harvest Cubensis mushrooms will be automatically cancelled and refunded. Customers who violate this policy may be restricted from future purchases.
Why don't you sell in certain states?
We’re committed to operating legally and responsibly – which means respecting state laws even when they differ from federal regulations.
State-Specific Restrictions: While the DEA has confirmed that Psilocybe Cubensis spores are federally legal, four states have enacted their own restrictions:
- California (CA)
- Georgia (GA)
- Idaho (ID
- Florida (FL)
These states specifically prohibit the purchase and shipment of spores categorized as “magic mushroom spores,” even for research purposes.
Our Compliance Commitment: As a Washington State-based company, we stay current with all applicable laws to protect both our customers and our business. We’d rather miss out on sales than put anyone at legal risk!
We Can Still Help: Good news! We can ship our 100% legal Gourmet & Medicinal liquid cultures to all 50 states, including CA, GA, ID, and FL. These include fascinating varieties like shiitake, oyster, and lion’s mane.
Always Verify: Laws can change, and local regulations may vary. We encourage everyone to check their local and state laws before ordering.
Questions about your state’s laws? Email us at [email protected] – we’re here to help you stay compliant while exploring mycology!
