In 1955, American banker, author, and amateur ethnomycologist, Gordon Wasson, visited a village in Oaxaca Mexico and was introduced to this psilocybin producing mushroom through legendary village shaman, Maria Sabina. This interaction consequently introduced the western world to magic mushrooms and their effects.
