The Hillbilly cubensis mushroom strain is one of the most common species of Psilocybe cubensis, but it has recently received a lot of attention. This mushroom was originally discovered in Arkansas by a Mycotopia user simply known as “Hillbilly.” It was observed to be growing in very thick bunches, or large flushes, with medium-sized caramel colored caps with medium to thick stems. Cultivators from parts of the world that have made growing these mushrooms legal have noticed very quick colonization, on strong rhizomorphic growth, in thick clusters. A unique mutation that Hillbilly can produce has been identified as Hillbilly Pumpkin, which displays much thicker, almost bulbous-shaped, fruit reminiscent of pumpkins. The original Hillbilly consistently produces beautifully dense and dark brown spore prints and makes a great addition to your spore collection.

Psilocybe cubensis var. Hillbilly were first foraged in the late 1990’s in Arkansas, by a Mycotopia user known as “Hillbilly.”

Hillbilly magic mushrooms can be found in many parts of the world, but the temperate climates of North America tend to be its favorite environment, including the Pacific Northwest. They are typically found near dung, compost, pastures, and gardens.

Mushroom Spore Features

Hillbilly are known for their more rough appearance with smaller caps in relation to their stem size. They can produce smaller, yet dense spore prints that are dark brown in color.
